Amaro believes Adams could return in September

On DL with rotator cuff inflammation, veteran reliever long-tossing in Florida

PHILADELPHIA -- Phillies right-hander Mike Adams had been pitching well before he landed on the disabled list June 7 with right rotator cuff inflammation.

His return is not imminent, but Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said the organization believes Adams can pitch again in September. Adams, who had a 2.12 ERA in 19 appearances, has been long-tossing in Clearwater, Fla., but had been scheduled to throw a bullpen session Sunday.

Adams is in the final year of a two-year, $12 million contract. He has a $6 million club option for 2015 that vests automatically if he throws 60 innings this season. The option jumps to $6.5 million if he throws 120 innings in 2013-14.

Neither will happen. He has thrown just 42 innings over the past two seasons.
