Phillies release veteran right-hander Marquis

NEW YORK -- The Phillies announced Sunday morning that they released veteran right-hander Jason Marquis from the organization after signing him in early June.

The 36-year-old made eight starts for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, posting a 4.56 ERA over 47 1/3 innings, but was placed on the Minor League disabled list with an oblique injury in the middle of his return campaign. His last start came Friday, when he allowed five runs over 6 2/3 innings, earning him his last victory for the IronPigs.

Marquis was signed to provide pitching depth at a time when the Phillies had lost Cliff Lee, Jonathon Pettibone, and Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez to the disabled list back in June.

Marquis went 9-5 with a 4.05 ERA in 20 starts last season with the Padres before undergoing Tommy John surgery in July. He is 121-114 with a 4.56 ERA in 368 appearances (309 starts) over a 14-year big league career.
