Phillies to take part in ALS fundraiser Monday

Thousands of fans expected at Citizens Bank Park for Phillies Phestival

PHILADELPHIA -- The Phillies will spend their off-day on Monday afternoon with thousands of fans at Citizens Bank Park for the annual Phillies Phestival, an event which raises awareness and research funds for ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease).

Since 1984, the Phillies organization raised over $14.3 million for The ALS Association, Greater Philadelphia Chapter's patient services and research. Monday's event marks the 30th anniversary of the Phillies' partnership with the ALS Association and coincides with the 75th anniversary of Lou Gehrig's iconic Farewell to Baseball speech, made on July 4, 1939.

"This is a relationship that has stood the test of time," said ALS Association president Ellyn Phillips. "The Phillies provide help and hope for families. It's very touching that they would do this. No team does what this event is like. It's really amazing."

"Our fans have been fantastic supporting this cause, they are the real reason that this has worked," said John Weber, Phillies vice president of sales and ticket operations.

Phillies Phestival includes a private meet and greet with players and ALS patients, autograph sessions with players, photo opportunities with second baseman Chase Utley and manager Ryne Sandberg, a silent auction, grab bags and a chance to pitch in the bullpen. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. ET.

The Phillies expect to raise $900,000 on Monday. The event is sold out, but admission-only tickets are still available by calling 215-463-1000. The cost is $15 for adults and $5 for kids. For more information, visit Phillies.com/philliesphestival.
