Lou Piniella inducted into the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame on Saturday

The winningest manager in Seattle Mariners history becomes the eighth member of the Mariners Hall of Fame during a special pregame ceremony on Saturday, August 9, when the Mariners take on the Chicago White Sox. The pregame ceremony starts at 5:30pm. First pitch is at 6:10pm. The first 20,000 fans through the gates will receive a Lou Piniella Hall of Fame Bobblehead, courtesy of ROOT SPORTS.

Volunteers for the American Red Cross will be outside the gates of Safeco Field Saturday to collect donations for the Central and Eastern Washington wildfires. Many families in affected areas are still under evacuation orders. Red Cross shelters are operating in several locations and case workers and mental health professionals are helping residents assess their losses and access available resources. Donations can also be made by texting REDCROSS to 90999. A $10 donation will appear on your cell phone bill.

Lou's Career Highlights

During Piniella's 10 years as manager the Mariners had seven winning seasons. He guided the team to its first trip to the postseason during the dramatic 1995 stretch run. Piniella was also at the helm during the Mariners record-setting 116-win 2001 season. In all, the Mariners had a .542 winning percentage (840-711), won three American League West Division championships and made four postseason appearances during Piniella's years in Seattle.

During a 23-year career as a Major League manager with the Yankees (1986-88), Reds (1990-92), Mariners (1993-2002), Rays (2003-05) and Cubs (2007-10), Piniella was named Manager of the Year three times (1995, 2001 and 2008) while posting a .517 winning percentage.

As a player, outfielder Lou Piniella was selected by the Seattle Pilots in the 1968-69 expansion draft, but was traded to the Kansas City Royals during spring training in 1969. His playing career took off from there. In a 16-year career he compiled a .291 batting average with 1,705 hits, 102 home runs, 305 doubles and 766 runs batted in.

Piniella joins the seven current members of the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame: Alvin Davis, Dave Niehaus, Jay Buhner, Edgar Martinez, Randy Johnson, Dan Wilson and Ken Griffey Jr. The Hall of Fame was created to honor the players, staff and other individuals that greatly contributed to the history of the Mariners franchise.

Note: To be eligible for selection, an individual must have been active in a Mariners uniform for at least five seasons and be retired at least two years. In addition to his impact on the field, other considerations for possible induction include his positive impact on the Northwest community outside of baseball and his positive impact in enhancing the image of the Seattle Mariners and/or Major League Baseball.
