Pirates sign free agent Sean Rodriguez

The Pittsburgh Pirates today announced the signing of free agent infielder/outfielder Sean Rodriguez to a one-year contract for the 2016 season. The announcement was made by Pirates Executive Vice President, General Manager Neal Huntington.

Rodriguez spent the entire 2015 season with the Pirates and set a career high in games played (139). He made 102 appearances at first base, 16 in left field, 14 in right field, eight at third base, seven at second base and three at shortstop.

The right-handed hitting Rodriguez produced a .346 batting average during the month of August and hit .333 (24-for-72) in his last 52 games with the Bucs.

Rodriguez was acquired by the Pirates via a trade with Tampa Bay on 12/1/14. During his eight seasons in the Majors, the versatile defender has made over 100 appearances at all four infield positions, in addition to 90 in left field, 34 in right field and 11 in center field.

With the addition of Rodriguez, there are now 39 players on Pittsburgh's 40-man roster.
