Pirates Sign Second Round Pick Wyatt Mathisen

The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed catcher Wyatt Mathisen, the club’s second round selection in the 2012 First-Year Player Draft. The announcement was made Joe DelliCarri, the Pirates Director of Amateur Scouting.

As a senior this year at Calallen (TX) High School, Mathisen hit .433 with 13 home runs and 40 RBI. He was also rated by Baseball America as the 25th-best position player and 47th-best prospect overall in this year’s draft.

As a junior, Mathisen was named to the All-State Tournament team, a District 31-4A MVP, a Max Prep All-American, Perfect Game USA All-American, the South Texas Player-of-the-Year and was a member of the Texas Rangers Area Code Team.

“The Pirates are excited to add the offensive and defensive skill set of Wyatt to the organization,” said DelliCarri. “He possesses the ability to be a quality catcher and a solid offensive producer from the catching position. His grounded foundation and passion for the game will serve him very well on his journey through baseball.”

Mathisen has been assigned to the Gulf Coast League Pirates.
