Cueto takes home top honors in Reds' awards

CINCINNATI -- Amid the festivities of Redsfest on Friday night, the Reds announced their 2014 team award winners.

Rotation ace Johnny Cueto was named the Reds' Most Valuable Player and Most Outstanding Pitcher. Cueto, who finished second in National League Cy Young Award voting, was 20-9 with 2.25 ERA over a league-leading 34 starts and 243 2/3 innings.

Catcher Brayan Pena earned the Joe Nuxhall Good Guy Award. Right-hander Ben Lively received the Sheldon "Chief" Bender Award as the organization's Minor League Player of the Year. Lively, the Reds' No. 6 prospect, was 13-7 with a 3.04 ERA over 26 starts combined at Class A Advanced Bakersfield and Double-A Pensacola.

Outfielder Kyle Waldrop was named the Minor League Hitter of the Year after he batted .338 with 14 home runs, 37 doubles and 67 RBIs over 131 games for Bakersfield and Pensacola. The Minor League Pitcher of the Year was Reds No. 8 prospect Nick Travieso, who was 14-5 with a 3.03 ERA over 26 starts at Class A Dayton.

Bakersfield outfielder Jon Matthews received the Minor League Community Service Award.

Voting for the awards was completed by the local chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
