Rangers acquire righty Noesi from Mariners

The Rangers acquired right-hander Hector Noesi from the Mariners on Saturday in exchange for a player to be named or cash considerations.

Seattle designated Noesi, 27, for assignment on April 4 after he made two appearances this season. He spent most of last season with Triple-A Tacoma, where he went 3-3 with a 5.83 ERA in 15 games, including 11 starts. Over the past three seasons with the Mariners, Noesi went a combined 2-14 with a 6.13 ERA in 36 games, including 19 starts.

To make room on the 40-man roster, Texas transferred infielder Jurickson Profar from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day DL. Profar began the year on the disabled list due to a torn muscle in his right shoulder and isn't eligible to return to the active roster until May 29.

The Rangers will need to make another roster move when Noesi joins the club in Arlington on Sunday. Noesi probably won't be available to pitch until Monday, and the Rangers expect him to be a long man in the bullpen.

"He comes in in that role to give us some length in the 'pen," general manager Jon Daniels said. "He's started and pitched in the bullpen in the big leagues [but] hasn't had the success yet that people thought he would coming out of the Minor Leagues. He's 27 years old, durable, good arm, plus stuff, a big-time strike thrower even at the big league level."

The Mariners picked up Noesi along with Jesus Montero as part of the January 2012 trade that sent right-hander Michael Pineda to the Yankees. In 66 games with the Yankees and Mariners, Noesi is 4-16 with a 5.64 ERA, 136 strikeouts and 73 walks in 191 1/3 innings.

Noesi gave up three earned runs on two hits while striking out two in one inning of work this season before the Mariners designated him for assignment.
