Rangers interview Red Sox bench coach Lovullo for skipper's spot

ARLINGTON -- The Rangers, looking to fill their vacant manager's job, began interviewing candidates from the outside by meeting with Red Sox bench coach Torey Lovullo on Tuesday.

The Rangers are expected to meet with Pirates bench coach Jeff Banister, White Sox third base coach Joe McEwing, Indians bullpen coach Kevin Cash and Puerto Rico winter league executive Alex Cora later this week or early next week. Interim manager Tim Bogar is also still to be interviewed.

Lovullo spent two seasons as the Red Sox bench coach, replacing Bogar under manager John Farrell. He also spent two years on Farrell's staff in Toronto.

Prior to that, Lovullo managed nine seasons in the Indians and Red Sox farm systems with a .520 winning percentage, four post-season appearances and two league championships.

Lovullo spent parts of eight seasons in the Major Leagues as a utility infielder with the Tigers, Angels, Mariners, Athletics, Indians and Phillies. He also played one season in Japan.

The Rangers previously interviewed pitching coach Mike Maddux and Triple-A manager Steve Buechele. The Rangers are hoping to have a manager named by the start of the World Series. The Rangers are looking for a replacement for Ron Washington, who resigned on Sept. 5. The Rangers were 14-8 under Bogar, winning 13 of their last 16 games.
