Rangers prospect Gallo hits 10th homer

Third baseman Joey Gallo hit his 10th home run Thursday, tying him for the most in the Minor Leagues, and Class A Advanced Myrtle Beach defeated Frederick, 9-5.

Gallo, ranked by MLB.com as the Rangers' No. 5 prospect and No. 86 overall, went 2-for-4 with a walk and stole his first base of the season. He is hitting .326 and leads the Carolina League in runs (25), walks (20), slugging percentage (.767) and OPS (1.204).

Gallo led the Minor Leagues with 40 home runs last year and is tied with Tigers outfielder J.D. Martinez for the most this season. Martinez hit 10 home runs at Triple-A Toledo before being promoted to the Major Leagues last week.

Despite moving up a level this season, Gallo has been able to roughly match the home run pace he set in 2013. He hit his 10th in his 111th plate appearance last year, 27 games into the season. This year, his 10th came in his 109th plate appearance, 25 games into the season.
