Rangers purchase contract of RHP Chi Chi Gonzalez from Round Rock

Arlington, Texas - The Texas Rangers announced this afternoon that the club has purchased the contract of right-handed pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez (#21) from Triple-A Round Rock. To make room on the active roster for Gonzalez, the team has designated infielder Tommy Field for assignment.

Gonzalez, 23, is scheduled to make his major league debut as the Rangers starting pitcher tonight against Boston. He has spent the entire season with Triple-A Round Rock, posting a 3-5 record with a 4.15 ERA (20 ER/43.1 IP) in 8 games/starts. He was scratched from his last scheduled Triple-A start on Wednesday vs. El Paso ahead of tonight's game. He last pitched on May 22 vs. Albuquerque, taking the loss (6.0, 7 H, 4 R-3 ER, 3 BB, 4 SO, 0 HR, 99 pitches/64 strikes). Gonzalez has compiled a 2.20 ERA (4 ER/16.1 IP) over his last 3 starts, holding opponents to a .237 average (14-59) in that span.

The club's 2014 Nolan Ryan Minor League Pitcher of the Year will make his debut just two years removed from his selection in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2013 June draft. He was in major league spring training with the Rangers for the first time this season, going 1-0 with a 2.89 ERA (6 ER/18.2 IP) in 5 games/2 starts.

Field has batted .195 with 2 home runs and 5 RBI in 14 games with Texas since having his contract purchased from Round Rock on May 11. The Rangers have 10 days to trade, release, or outright Field to the minor leagues.

With today's moves, the Rangers still have 39 players on the club's 40-man roster.
