Rangers help local kids get ready for school
ARLINGTON -- Rangers catcher Robinson Chirinos and several of his teammates handed out 1,000 new backpacks filled with school supplies to children at a Fort Worth church on Saturday morning as part of a "Back to School Outreach Bash," sponsored by Chirinos' foundation.
Pitcher Yovani Gallardo, a Fort Worth native, said he appreciated the chance to attend and support the local community.
"I grew up not too far from where we went today," Gallardo said. "Just to be able to have that opportunity to be part of something like that in the area I grew up, it's very important."
Chirinos' foundation provides food, clothing, equipment, sports facilities and items needed for school to less fortunate children. On Saturday, kids had access to free haircuts, food and drink, dental supplies and groceries.
"[Chirinos] does a great job with that," Gallardo said. "He brought it to my attention a while back, actually. He mentioned that he's been doing that for a few years now and asked me if I wanted to be a part of it and I said I would like to."
