Injured Jaso improving, but not swinging bat yet

MIAMI -- John Jaso, who suffered a left wrist contusion on Opening Day, wasn't healing fast enough, so the Rays had to make a move Friday by putting Jaso on the disabled list and calling up outfielder Mikie Mahtook.

"No, [Jaso is] not [healing] as quickly as we'd like," Rays manager Kevin Cash said. "We didn't want to handicap ourselves any with holding off. But hopefully he'll recover quick enough to where this DL stint won't be too long."

Cash noted that "as of right now" the Rays expect Jaso to be ready to return by the time his stint on the DL is complete.

The injury "has improved and it continues to get better but we don't know at what pace it's going to really take off or not," Cash said.

Cash said that Jaso is not yet swinging a bat.

"But that doesn't mean Jaso will miss a lot of time," Cash said.
