McGee leaves game in seventh with leg injury

DETROIT -- Rays reliever Jake McGee left Thursday's 5-2 loss to the Tigers in the seventh inning after taking a Miguel Cabrera comebacker off his left shin.

McGee was diagnosed with a contusion and is considered day to day.

He entered the game in the sixth inning, allowing a sacrifice fly and recording a strikeout. He struck out the first batter of the seventh before Cabrera hit a ball back at him. McGee retrieved the ball, but his throw to first was wide, allowing Cabrera to reach safely with a single.

McGee tried a few warmup pitches before coming out of the game. He was replaced by Jamey Wright.

"It's just a bruise, and when I tried to throw more pitches, I felt it in my leg," McGee said. "I didn't want to risk it, especially because it was my push-off leg, too, so I put a lot of pressure on it. If it was a little more to the right, it could have hit me right on my shin, but it hit to the left of my shin, so I should be good to go tomorrow."

McGee said he would wrap the shin in ice on the trip home and try to get the swelling down. Neither McGee nor manager Joe Maddon expect any lingering effects.
