Red Sox activate infielder/outfielder Kelly Johnson from Disabled List

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today activated infielder/outfielder Kelly Johnson from the 15-day disabled list. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, outfielder/infielder Mookie Betts was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket after last night's game in St. Louis. Johnson (wearing No. 7) will be active for tonight's 7:15 p.m. ET game at Busch Stadium against the Cardinals.

Johnson, 32, was acquired on July 31 from the New York Yankees in exchange for shortstop Stephen Drew and cash considerations, and was on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right groin when acquired. On his two-game rehabilitation assignment with Double-A Portland, he walked twice and scored a run, making one start at first base and one at third base. The left-handed batter has played in 77 games for the Yankees this season between third base (41 games), first base (27), left field (three), second base (one), and right field (one), hitting .219 (44-for-210) with nine doubles, two triples, six home runs, 22 RBI, and 23 walks.
 
Betts, 21, hit .286 (2-for-7) with a run scored over three games (two starts) with the Red Sox in his second career major league stint after being recalled on August 1. The right-handed batter returns to Pawtucket, where he has batted .321 with 12 extra-base hits (five doubles, two triples, five home runs) and 24 RBI in 34 games. In 88 minor league games this season between Double-A Portland and Pawtucket, he has hit .342 (120-for-351). He has combined for 23 doubles, five triples, 11 home runs, 28 RBI, 30 stolen bases, and 55 walks.
