Red Sox activate outfielder/first baseman Daniel Nava from 15-day disabled list

BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox today activated outfielder/first baseman Daniel Nava from the 15-day disabled list. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, infielder Deven Marrero was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket following last night's game. Nava will be active for tonight's game against the Houston Astros at Minute Maid Park beginning at 8:10 p.m. ET.

Nava, 32, was placed on the disabled list on May 26 with a left thumb sprain. In a 10-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Pawtucket, he made six starts in right field, three starts at first base, and one start as a designated hitter, going 9-for-36 (.250) with four runs, a double, home run, eight RBI, and two stolen bases. From July 10-16, he recorded three straight multi-hit games, going 7-for-12 (.583) with three runs, a home run, and seven RBI in that span. In 27 games for the Red Sox this season, Nava has appeared defensively in right field (15 games, 12 starts), left field (six games, one start), and first base (five games, all starts). At the plate, he is 10-for-63 (.159) with two doubles, seven RBI, and seven walks. Signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent in 2008, Nava's major league career spans five seasons, all with Boston (2010, 2012-15). The switch hitter from Redwood City, CA has hit .268 (351-for-1,312) with 87 doubles, one triple, 23 home runs, 169 RBI, and 147 walks in 422 career big league games. He is a career .285 hitter (289-for-1,014) with a .377 on-base percentage against right-handed pitchers.

Marrero, 24, played in five games in his first career major league stint, going 1-for-7 with a run scored while making three appearances (one start) at second base and one at shortstop. Prior to being selected to the major league roster on June 25, Marrero hit .245 (57-for-233) with 10 doubles, one triple, four homers, 21 RBI, 30 runs, 19 walks, and nine stolen bases in 67 games with Triple-A Pawtucket. Defensively, he has appeared in 60 minor league games this year at shortstop, six at second base, and one at third base. The native of Miami, FL entered the season as Boston's No. 9 prospect according to Baseball America. He was tabbed the Red Sox 2014 Minor League Defensive Player of the Year after posting a .976 fielding percentage between Double-A Portland and Pawtucket, and was named the organization's 2013 Minor League Base Stealer of the Year after succeeding in a minor league-leading 27 of 29 stolen base attempts (93.1%). A first-round selection (24^th overall) by the Red Sox in the 2012 June Draft, Marrero has hit .256 (342-for-1,337) with 74 doubles, six triples, 14 homers, 130 RBI, and 76 stolen bases over parts of four minor league seasons.
