Red Sox Activate Right-Hander Clayton Mortensen

Right-Hander Pedro Beato Optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today activated right-hander Clayton Mortensen from the disabled list. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-hander Pedro Beato was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket after last night's game against the Rockies.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Mortensen, 28, completed a three-game rehab assignment with Pawtucket on Monday and posted a 4.50 ERA (2 ER/4.0 IP) with two walks, and four strikeouts in those outings. With Boston this season, he has a 1-2 record with a 5.34 ERA (18 ER/30.1 IP), 16 walks, and 21 strikeouts. His 30.1 innings out of the Red Sox bullpen are second most on the team.

Beato, 26, has not allowed any runs in his three relief appearances for the Red Sox in 2013. He threw a scoreless ninth inning to finish last night's game, an 11-4 win over Colorado. Beato will rejoin Pawtucket where he has gone 5-1 with two saves and a 1.83 ERA (7 ER/34.1 IP) in 20 relief appearances.
