Red Sox Announce Additional Recipients of the "100 Acts of Kindness"
BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox and the Red Sox Foundation today announced additional recipients of the “100 Acts of Kindness,” a program that recognizes and supports the work of charitable organizations throughout New England during Fenway Park’s 100th anniversary season.
Charitable institutions that will be recognized include:
The Jimmy Fund Clinic: Today, August 20, Wally the Green Monster will deliver toys to the many pediatric cancer patients at the Jimmy Fund Clinic. The act is part of Jimmy Fund Month, where the Red Sox will support the partnership that began in 1953 by raising funds and enhancing care at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. Designed specifically for the comfort and convenience of pediatric cancer patients and their families, the Jimmy Fund Clinic is one of the world's premier centers for pediatric cancer research and treatment.
Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon: On August 21 and 22, the Red Sox will, for the 11th straight year, present the Red Sox Jimmy Fund Radio-Telethon on WEEI/NESN. The event, which last year raised more than $3.4 million, is the club’s 59th Act of Kindness in 2012 marking the 59th anniversary of the Red Sox formal relationship with the Jimmy Fund. The 36-hour fundraiser will run from Tuesday, August 21 from 6 a.m. to midnight, and Wednesday, August 22 from 6 a.m. to midnight on WEEI and NESN. The annual fundraiser was created in 2002 by the Red Sox in conjunction with their radio partner, WEEI. NESN joined forces in 2003. Red Sox players and their wives have participated in the fundraiser each year.
Boston Health Care for the Homeless: On August 24 and 25, the Red Sox and Boston Health Care for the Homeless (BHCHP) will be collecting socks for the homeless as part of the “Sox for Socks” program. Fans are asked to bring packages of new white socks to the Red Sox vs. Kansas City games on Friday, August 24, and Saturday, August 25. Volunteers will be collecting the socks at all Fenway Park gates before and throughout the first few innings of the games. Doctors and nurses from BHCHP will distribute the socks to patients they care for on the streets, park benches, and in shelters across Greater Boston. Access to shoes and socks is often limited for the homeless men and women living in shelters and on the streets creating a range of foot ailments. The “Sox for Socks” program has helped enabled BHCHP to fulfill its mission to provide access to high quality health care for all homeless men, women and children in the greater Boston area.
With the completion of these Acts of Kindness, the number of special recipients of the “100 Acts of Kindness” will total 60, with a final goal of completing 100 by the end of 2012.
About the 100 Acts of Kindness: As a way to highlight and support the important work done by the many charitable institutions throughout New England and beyond, the Red Sox are engaging in “100 Acts of Kindness” with various not-for-profit organizations during the 100th anniversary season of Fenway Park in 2012. These acts will take on a number of different forms, including donations, volunteer efforts, and hosting community events. Each act will be designed to highlight organizations and causes throughout New England. Red Sox ownership, players, alumni, and staff will participate. Additional acts will be announced throughout 2012, culminating with 100 by the end of this 100th Anniversary year.
