Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:

  • Right-hander Allen Webster was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket. To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, right-hander Steven Wright was recalled from Pawtucket.

 

  • Right-hander Alfredo Aceves was optioned to Pawtucket. To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, right-hander Pedro Beato was recalled from Pawtucket.

Both Wright and Beato will be available for tonight's game against the Mariners in Seattle at 10:10 p.m. ET.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

Wright, 28, rejoins the Red Sox for his second stint in the majors this season. He made his major league debut for Boston in relief on April 23 against Oakland at Fenway Park. With Pawtucket this year, he has gone 4-5 with a 3.81 ERA (38 ER/89.2 IP), 49 walks, and 70 strikeouts in 16 starts. He has thrown 17.2 scoreless innings over his last three appearances, which included a nine-inning shutout on July 1 against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The 26-year-old Beato begins his third major league stint of the year with Boston. He has made three relief appearances for the Red Sox in 2013, all of which were scoreless. At Pawtucket, he was 5-3 with two saves, a 2.18 ERA (10 ER/41.1 IP), 18 walks, and 34 strikeouts in 25 games. Beato has thrown two innings or more in 11 of his 25 appearances for the PawSox.

Webster, 23, started last night's game against the Mariners in Seattle and allowed seven runs on six hits in 2.1 innings. Overall, he has made six starts for the Red Sox in 2013 and is 1-2 with a 9.57 ERA (28 ER/26.1 IP), 14 walks, and 21 strikeouts in those outings. He will rejoin Pawtucket where he was 5-1 with a 2.87 ERA (17 ER/53.1 IP), 22 walks, 60 strikeouts in 11 starts.   

Aceves, 31, allowed one hit in 0.2 innings of relief last night at Safeco Field. In 11 games (six starts) for Boston this year, he is 4-1 with a 4.86 ERA (20 ER/37.0 IP), 22 walks, and 24 strikeouts. At Pawtucket, Aceves is 4-2 with a 4.25 ERA (23 ER/48.2 IP), 17 walks, and 39 strikeouts.
