Red Sox trade outfielder Shane Victorino and cash considerations to Angels

BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox today traded outfielder Shane Victorino and cash considerations to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in exchange for infielder Josh Rutledge. To fill Victorino's spot on the 25-man roster, outfielder Rusney Castillo was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket and is expected to start in tonight's series opener against the Chicago White Sox beginning at 7:10 p.m. at Fenway Park.

Victorino, 34, has hit .245 (23-for-94) with two doubles, one homer, four RBI, and five stolen bases this season. He was limited to 33 games for the Red Sox due to two stints on the disabled list, and made 26 starts, all in right field. Victorino helped the Red Sox to the World Series title in 2013, his first season with Boston, and that year earned his fourth Gold Glove Award. In 185 games with the Red Sox from 2013-15, he batted .282 (196-for-694) with 34 doubles, three triples, 18 homers, 77 RBI and 28 stolen bases in 31 attempts. He drove in 12 runs in 14 postseason games for Boston in 2013, becoming the only player in history to drive in the clinching run in three series during a single postseason. In 1,261 major league games over parts of 12 major league seasons with the San Diego Padres (2003), Philadelphia Phillies (2005-12), Los Angeles Dodgers (2012), and Red Sox (2013-15), the native of Wailuku, HI is a career .276 hitter (1,256-for-4,546) with 229 doubles, 68 triples, 108 homers, 486 RBI, 374 walks, and 229 stolen bases.

Rutledge, 26, began the 2015 season on the Angels' Triple-A Salt Lake roster, batting .274 (85-for-310) with 19 doubles, three triples, five homers, 32 RBI, 19 walks, and 45 runs scored. For the Bees, he has appeared at shortstop (38 games), second base (14 games), and third base (13 games). He also appeared in three games on rehab in the Rookie-level Arizona League this season. Originally selected by Colorado in the third round of the 2010 June Draft, the native of Alabama has appeared in 266 major league games in his career, all with the Rockies from 2012-14, hitting .259 (226-for-871) with 42 doubles, 13 triples, 19 homers, 89 RBI, 51 walks, and 126 runs scored. His big league career includes experience at shortstop (140 games, 127 starts), second base (82 games, 75 starts), and third base (five games, all starts). Last season, Rutledge played in a career-high 105 major league games and hit .269 (83-for-309), including a .346 average (44-for-127) with runners on base and a .319 average (23-for-72) with runners in scoring position.

Castillo, 28, has made 26 appearances in one stint with the major league club this season, starting 14 games in right field and four in center field. He has hit .230 (17-for-74) with six runs scored, a double, a home run, and six RBI, and went 6-for-13 (.462) with two out and runners in scoring position. The Cuban native has appeared 17 times in center field (16 starts) and 16 times in right field (14 starts) for Pawtucket this season, batting .282 (44-for-156) with 17 runs scored, seven doubles, three home runs, 17 RBI, and 10 stolen bases. Castillo has played in 36 career major league games since signing with the Red Sox on August 23, 2014, hitting .264 (29-for-110) with 12 runs scored, two doubles, three home runs, and 12 RBI. He last appeared in a major league game on June 21 at Kansas City, prior to being optioned to Pawtucket on June 23.
