Farrell happy with emphasis on defense

BALTIMORE -- The Red Sox entered Friday's opener vs. the Orioles having not committed an error in six consecutive games. That marked a vast improvement from the start of last season, when they committed nine errors in the first 10 contests.

While the streak came to an end on Pablo Sandoval's throwing error in the sixth inning, the Red Sox nonetheless flashed some leather in a 7-5 win at Camden Yards.

Dustin Pedroia's tough pick to start a double play in the third and a putout/throwout by Hanley Ramirez in the sixth highlighted the glove work.

Manager John Farrell lauded the work his team has logged in advance meetings, in which the players focus on the opposition's tendencies to make the proper adjustments, positioning and shifts.

"It's impressive to watch them go about their individual routines," Farrell said. "I think defense and baserunning are sometimes controllable, and that comes from preparation. The work has clearly been made. We're proud of the way they go about it."
