Red Sox place right-handed pitcher Heath Hembree on disabled list

Infielder Travis Shaw Recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today placed right-handed pitcher Heath Hembree on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to June 15) with right shoulder inflammation. To fill his spot on the 25-man roster, infielder Travis Shaw was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket. Shaw will be active for tonight's series finale against the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field beginning at 7:10 p.m.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

In four relief appearances for the Red Sox this season, Hembree, 26, has no record with an 8.53 ERA (6 ER/6.1 IP). Since allowing six runs in his first game of the season for Boston on April 26 at Baltimore, the right-hander has not allowed a run over his last 5.0 innings of work, spanning three appearances. In his 18 games for Pawtucket this season, Hembree has worked out of the bullpen going 0-2 with seven saves and a 0.83 ERA (2 ER/21.2 IP), fanning 20 batters while allowing just 13 hits and two walks. Over parts of three major league seasons with the San Francisco Giants (2013) and Red Sox (2014-15), Hembree is 0-0 with a 4.13 ERA (11 ER/24.0 IP) and 21 strikeouts in 19 games. He was acquired by Boston via trade with San Francisco in exchange for right-handed pitcher Jake Peavy and cash considerations on July 26, 2014.

Shaw, 25, returns to the Red Sox for the third major league stint of this season and his major league career. In two games for Boston, including one start on May 8 at Toronto, the left-handed batter is hitless in three at-bats with one walk. He most recently appeared for the Red Sox as a defensive replacement this past Sunday against the Blue Jays at Fenway Park. In 58 contests for the PawSox this season, he has hit .259 (57-for-220) with nine doubles, two triples, five home runs, 26 RBI, and 22 walks, appearing in games at third base (32 games), first base (22), and left field (3). Signed by the Red Sox as a ninth-round selection in the 2011 June Draft, Shaw has hit .262 (480-for-1,829) with 117 doubles, 11 triples, 69 home runs, and 276 RBI in 502 games over parts of five seasons in the minor leagues.
