Red Sox Recall INF Travis Shaw from Triple-A Pawtucket; Option RHP Jonathan Aro to Pawtucket

The Boston Red Sox today recalled infielder Travis Shaw from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Jonathan Aro was optioned to Pawtucket following last night's game. Shaw will be active for today's game against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park beginning at 1:35 p.m.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

This is the 25-year-old Shaw's fifth career big league stint, all this season. In nine games for Boston, he is 3-for-15 (.200) with two runs scored and a walk. He has played in five games (three starts) at first base and in three games (one start) at third base, also making one appearance in left field. In 77 contests for Pawtucket this season, he has hit .249 (72-for-289) with 12 doubles, two triples, five home runs, 30 RBI, and 26 walks, including a .298 (48-for-161) batting average in his last 43 Triple-A games dating back to May 20. For the PawSox, he has appeared at third base (43 games), first base (31 games), and left field (3 games). Signed by Boston as a ninth-round selection in the 2011 June Draft, Shaw has hit .261 (495-for-1,898) with 120 doubles, 11 triples, 69 home runs, and 280 RBI in 521 games over parts of five seasons in the minor leagues.

Aro, 24, returned for his second career major league stint on Thursday but did not appear for the Sox. He pitched in three games for Boston during his first stint from June 25-July 1, allowing six runs in 4.2 innings (11.57 ERA) with three strikeouts. In 25 minor league appearances between Double-A Portland and Pawtucket this season, the right-hander is 3-3 with one save, a 2.95 ERA (18 ER), and 60 strikeouts in 55.0 innings, holding opponents to a .205 batting average (42-for-205) while allowing just 16 walks. In 17 games since being promoted to the PawSox on May 14, the Dominican native has totaled 41 strikeouts and just eight walks in 32.2 innings, posting a 3.03 ERA (11 ER). Signed by Boston as an international free agent in June 2011, Aro has gone 16-15 with 12 saves, a 2.80 ERA (88 ER/282.2 IP), and 279 strikeouts in 92 outings (12 starts) over parts of five minor league seasons in the Red Sox system.
