Red Sox recall infielderTravis Shaw from Triple-A Pawtucket

Option Right-Handed Pitcher Steven Wright to Pawtucket

BOSTON, MA - The Boston Red Sox today recalled infielder Travis Shaw from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room for him on the 25-man roster, right-handed pitcher Steven Wright was optioned to Pawtucket following Sunday's game. Shaw is starting at first base in tonight's series opener against the Miami Marlins at Fenway Park beginning at 7:10 p.m.

Executive Vice President/General Manager Ben Cherington made the announcement.

This is the 25-year-old Shaw's fourth career big league stint, all this season. He is hitless in nine at-bats with one walk and a run scored in six games for the Red Sox, appearing in three games (one start) at third base, two (one start) at first base, and one in left field. In 66 contests for Pawtucket this season, he has hit .250 (62-for-248) with nine doubles, two triples, five home runs, 28 RBI, and 23 walks at third base (37 games), first base (26), and left field (3). In 32 games since May 20, he ranks fifth among International League hitters with a .317 (38-for-120) batting average. Signed by the Red Sox as a ninth-round selection in the 2011 June Draft, Shaw has hit .261 (485-for-1,857) with 117 doubles, 11 triples, 69 home runs, and 278 RBI in 510 games over parts of five seasons in the minor leagues.

Wright, 30, did not appear in a game for Boston after being recalled on Saturday. The right-handed knuckleballer has pitched in 11 games over four stints with the Red Sox in 2015, going 3-2 with a 4.15 ERA (20 ER/43.1 IP), 24 strikeouts, and a .246 opponent average, including a 3.91 ERA (10 ER/23.0 IP) in four starts. He returns to Pawtucket, where he has worked exclusively as a starter, posting a 2-3 record, 3.00 ERA (13 ER/39.0 IP), and 34 strikeouts in six outings. Over his major league career, all with the Red Sox from 2013-15, Wright has gone 5-3 with a 3.94 ERA (34 ER/77.2 IP) in 21 games (six starts).
