Red Sox Select Eight Players on Second Day of the 2014 June Draft
BOSTON, MA-The Boston Red Sox today continued their participation in Major League Baseball's 2014 June Draft with eight additional selections in rounds 3-10. Red Sox Director of Amateur Scouting Amiel Sawdaye made the announcement.
Over the first two days of the draft, Boston has selected five pitchers (all right-handers), three infielders, two outfielders, and one catcher. Of the 11 players drafted, four are from high school and seven are from college.
With their first pick today, the Red Sox selected right-handed pitcher Jake Cosart in the third round (67th overall) out of Seminole State College of Florida. A 20-year-old red shirt freshman, he went 5-3 with a 5.34 ERA (38 ER/64.0), 67 strikeouts, and 23 walks allowed in 13 games, including 11 starts. This was his first season with Seminole State after transferring from Duke University. A native of Friendswood, TX, Cosart was named to the Perfect Game All-Texas Region First Team as a senior at Clear Creek High School in 2012. Jake is the brother of current Houston Astros right-handed pitcher Jarred Cosart.
Today's picks also included right-handed pitcher Kevin McAvoy, Boston's fourth-round selection, who went 9-1 with a 2.62 ERA (29 ER/99.2 IP) and 94 strikeouts in 15 starts this season as a junior at Rhode Island's Bryant University. The 20-year-old native of Syracuse, NY became the highest-drafted player in school history. McAvoy topped the Northeast Conference in both strikeouts and innings pitched, and helped the Bulldogs to the 2014 NEC title. Last summer, he pitched for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod Baseball League.
