In first five-hit game, Holt provides early jolt
Playing in his college town, native Texan puts on show for family, friends
HOUSTON -- Brock Holt just keeps getting better.
Leading off Sunday's game with a homer in the Red Sox's 11-0 win over the Astros at Minute Maid Park, Holt finished with a career-high five hits. The last Red Sox player to have five hits in a game was Dustin Pedroia, against Colorado in 2010.
"It was just one of those days," Holt said. "Felt good up there in the first and then to tack on."
It was just one of those series for Holt, who was playing in front of friends and family in Houston, where he went to college at Rice University. He put on a show, going 10-for-16 this weekend, culminating with his 5-for-6 outing Sunday.
He's made the most of his first season as an everyday player, as he hasn't missed an inning in 48 games since being slotted in the leadoff position.
His first hit Sunday was a home run to the upper deck in right field to start an offensive barrage for the Red Sox. He singled in the second and again in the fourth before striking out in the fifth. He added infield singles in the seventh and ninth.
Holt had a double and triple in the series opener Friday before hitting three singles Saturday. He completed the series cycle with the first-inning homer Sunday.
"He gets it started right away," manager John Farrell said. "It's not often you see a guy collect five hits in any one outing. The series that he's had here, the first half of the season he's had for us, he's done an outstanding job."
