Reds-Cubs rained out; no makeup announced

CINCINNATI -- Monday night's series opener between the Reds and Cubs was postponed because of persistent showers at Great American Ball Park.

No makeup date was immediately announced.

Alfredo Simon was scheduled to pitch for the Reds against the Cubs' Jeff Samardzija. Both clubs are scheduling their Monday starters to pitch Tuesday night.

"As it stands right now, we'll stay in order," Reds manager Bryan Price said. "I don't see where it would change. We're playing 17 straight, so it gives us a chance for all of these guys to get an extra day of rest."

The decision to call the game came following a 57-minute delay once the forecast appeared to be grim for the remainder of the evening.

"It looked like we were going to be able to start at 8:30 [p.m. ET] and then that window closed up," Price said. "Our concern was for the starting pitchers. There might have been a 45-minute to an hour window before it started to rain again and then it would have been on and off. Neither team wants to lose a starter in conditions, especially when we have nine more scheduled dates here in Cincinnati when we could play a doubleheader."

The makeup game is not expected to be played this week.

"I believe we are trying to work out a date for that July series that's roughly a week or so before the All-Star break [July 7-9]," Price said.

The postponement was only the eighth in the 12-season history of Great American Ball Park. The last one was on July 4, 2013, against the Giants.

Fans holding tickets for Monday's game can exchange them for another home game at face value during the regular season (exclusions apply) in advance of game day only, subject to availability. They do not immediately need to be exchanged on Monday.
