Reds, Nats trade challenges with different results

WASHINGTON -- Reds manager Bryan Price lost a replay challenge on Todd Frazier's attempted steal of third base, while Nationals manager Matt Williams had a call overturned in the late innings of Wednesday's game at Nationals Park.

With the Reds leading, 2-1, Frazier led off the sixth inning with a walk and took second on Brayan Pena's groundout. With Chris Heisey at the plate, Frazier attempted to steal third. The throw from catcher Wilson Ramos was prompt and on target, allowing third baseman Anthony Rendon to apply the tag. Third-base umpire Rob Drake ruled Frazier out, but Frazier believed he was safe and signaled for Price to challenge the call.

Following a four-minute review, the umpires ruled that the play stands. The game then went into a rain delay, which lasted 61 minutes.

In the bottom of the eighth, Nationals center fielder Denard Span led off and hit a liner to center field. Reds center fielder Billy Hamilton dove and appeared to catch the ball. However, Williams went to second-base umpire Marty Foster and challenged the call, believing that Hamilton trapped the ball. After a review of one minute and 38 seconds, the call was overturned and Span was credited with a single.

"When I rounded first, I could tell the gap between the ball and his glove," Span said. "I could tell he trapped it. I don't want to say it was an easy one to see, I definitely saw it."

The Reds went on to win the game, 2-1.
