Replay helps White Sox snuff out Dodgers rally

LOS ANGELES -- A fourth-inning play at third base of Wednesday's 2-1 White Sox victory over the Dodgers was challenged by manager Robin Ventura and overturned in Chicago's favor.

With runners on first and second and one out, Justin Turner's ground ball off winning pitcher John Danks went to second baseman Gordon Beckham. Instead of flipping to shortstop Alexei Ramirez covering second to get at least the force, Beckham chose to run Scott Van Slyke back toward first and then throw to Jose Abreu for the out on Turner.

Abreu then chased Van Slyke toward second and eventually flipped the ball to Ramirez, who ran Van Slyke back a few steps. At that point, Ramirez noticed Adrian Gonzalez had started breaking off third and fired to Leury Garcia, who put the tag on Gonzalez. The original call by third-base umpire Gary Cederstrom was that Gonzalez beat the tag, but replay overturned the call.

A crew-chief challenge took place in the fifth inning after Adam Dunn was given first base on an apparent Josh Beckett walk. However, the review showed that the count still was 3-2, sending Dunn back to the plate. Abreu, who had walked before Dunn and moved to second on what he thought was ball four to Dunn, had to go back to first.

Ventura said after the win that Abreu was sent back because home-plate umpire Kerwin Danley called ball four so catcher Drew Butera didn't have a chance on the play. With runners on the corners and one out, Dunn struck out swinging.
