Replay confirms out call in ninth

Double play for second out in final inning reviewed by umpires

MILWAUKEE -- The Pirates' last hopes of a ninth-inning rally in Saturday night's game were extinguished when a replay review confirmed that the Brewers had turned a double play.

After Pedro Alvarez drew a leadoff walk off Milwaukee closer Francisco Rodriguez, Russell Martin hit a grounder at third baseman Aramis Ramirez.

Ramirez's throw to second baseman Scooter Gennett forced Alvarez, but Gennett's throw to first pulled Mark Reynolds away from the bag.

First base umpire Vic Carapazza ruled that Reynolds' toes were still in contact with the bag when he caught the ball. Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle came out to ask the umpires to consider reviewing the play, and after crew chief Bill Miller did, the call was confirmed.

Rodriguez retired the next batter to close out the 3-2 win, which was the Brewers' eighth straight.
