Report: Trout discussing six-year extension
Deal reportedly worth an estimated $150M would buy out two years of free agency
TEMPE, Ariz. -- The Angels and outfielder Mike Trout are discussing a six-year contract extension worth an estimated $150 million, according to a report by Yahoo! Sports.
The Angels said "no comment" when asked about the report.
"No comment. I'm not going to comment on it," Trout said. "I like how a lot of people are writing it. It's pretty funny."
The reported six-year deal would buy out two years of Trout's free agency and put him on the market at age 28. The report also states the Angels offered around $140 million and the gap between the two sides -- believed to be in the low eight figures -- will be closed.
"I know what you guys are gonna ask. I'm here to get ready for the season," Trout told reporters when he reported to camp. "I don't want to comment on the contract negotiations and stuff. I'm here to just get ready, prepare myself for the upcoming season."
Angels owner Arte Moreno has gone on record to confirm the team has been in "active discussions" with Trout and his agent, Craig Landis, over a long-term deal despite being four years away from free agency. That said, Trout would not likely sign a new deal until after Opening Day because the organization doesn't want it to count toward its Collective Balance Tax payroll until 2015 when Vernon Wells and Joe Blanton no longer count against the books.
Trout, 22, has finished as the American League MVP runner-up in each of his first two full seasons.
