Reyes aims to test ankle with extra-base hits

TORONTO -- For a man who says his timing at the plate is off, Jose Reyes has a funny way of showing it.

Entering Sunday, Reyes went 13-for-46 (.283) with two home runs, six RBIs, eight runs scored and a stolen base since his return from the disabled list 11 games ago. Included in that was a hitting streak that ended at eight games after Saturday's 6-0 loss to the Twins.

"It's coming together," Reyes said of his timing. "I feel much better. I know where I want to be, you know, but it's getting close.

"I got three hits [Friday], and then yesterday I went 0-for-4. So when you get three hits you want to come away with at least one hit the next day ... but I went 0-for-4. That's why I talk to you guys about consistency."

It is not just hits that the Blue Jays shortstop is after, but a specific type of hit. Reyes is chasing doubles and triples to the gaps, where he can show not only that his bat is back, but that his ankle is fully healed, too.

"When I hit triples and doubles, that's when I'm home," Reyes said. "A long line drive into the gap -- that's when I feel I'm ready. And it's coming.

"That's the comfort that I want, because I'm still a little bit scared when I run the bases."

However, when asked if the All-Star break would give him some much-needed rest for his healing ankle, he flatly denied it.

"I missed such a long time that I don't want to take any day off," Reyes said.
