Manfred: Rose will participate in All-Star Game festivities

Pete Rose will play a role in this year's All-Star Game in Cincinnati, the hit king's hometown and the city where he starred for much of his career, Commissioner Rob Manfred said on Thursday.

Manfred made his remarks during a meeting with the Associated Press Sports Editors in New York.

"You can rest assured he will be allowed to participate," Manfred said, adding that he will discuss with Reds president and chief executive officer Bob Castellini about how Rose will participate.

Rose, placed on the permanently suspended list by Major League Baseball in 1989 for betting on baseball while manager of the Reds, has applied for reinstatement. Manfred has said he has no timetable to make a decision. MLB permitted Rose to take part in the introduction of the All-Century Team during the 1999 World Series and also a Reds ceremony in 2013 honoring their 1975 and '76 World Series championship teams.

The All-Star Game is scheduled to be played at Great American Ball Park on July 14.
