Patton, 30, was a ninth-round pick of the Astros in 2004, and the left-hander last pitched in the big leagues in '14, making 17 relief appearances with the Orioles and Padres.

In parts of six big league seasons, he's logged 169 innings in 151 games with a 3.25 ERA.

Patton spent 2015 with Triple-A Omaha in the Royals' system. The southpaw had a 2.37 ERA in 30 1/3 innings.
