Weiss taken to hospital, undergoes appendectomy
Bench coach Runnells fills in as skipper
ANAHEIM -- Rockies manager Walt Weiss was taken to the hospital before Wednesday's 2-1 loss to the Angels after experiencing stomach pain, and he underwent an emergency appendectomy, the club later announced.
Bench coach Tom Runnells, who managed Wednesday in Weiss' place -- and will do so again to at least start the four-game series at Dodger Stadium that begins Thursday -- gave this update on the manager:
"As far as I know, from what the trainers told me, he had some surgery on his appendix. It went well. He's resting. He's going to L.A., but probably out of commission for a couple of days."
Weiss was accompanied to the hospital by head athletic trainer Keith Dugger. There has been no timetable set for his return to the dugout.
Weiss, 51, began feeling ill after Tuesday night's game, a club spokesman said. He went to a hospital to be checked out before returning to the team hotel. Weiss was in the Rockies clubhouse earlier Wednesday before going back to the hospital, where he had the surgery.
