Rockies' Weiss unsuccessful on first replay challenge

MIAMI -- Rockies manager Walt Weiss was unsuccessful on his first instant replay challenge with two outs in the bottom of the third inning against the Marlins on Thursday afternoon.

Weiss challenged a call by first-base umpire Jerry Layne that first baseman Michael Cuddyer's foot had left the bag as he reached for second baseman Charlie Culberson's throw. Culberson had gone to his knees near the second-base bag to field Marcell Ozuna's grounder.

A run scored on the play to cut the Rockies' lead to 4-2, so Weiss challenged to see if he could save a run and end the inning. Upon review, the umpires ruled that the play would stand as called because the replay was inconclusive and the game resumed. The Rockies were left without a challenge for the rest of the game.

In the eighth inning, Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich stole second base on a close play to put the go-ahead run into scoring position. Weiss, who no longer had a challenge, came out to discuss the call with second-base umpire Hunter Wendelstedt. Being that the game was in the seventh inning or later, the umpires decided to review the play on their own, after which the safe call was confirmed. Yelich eventually scored the go-ahead run on an RBI single by Giancarlo Stanton.
