Royals-Indians opener rained out; DH on Sunday
Santana to start Saturday's contest; Guthrie gets ball for Game 1 of twin bill
KANSAS CITY -- The scheduled game on Friday night between the Royals and Indians was postponed because of rain about 20 minutes before the scheduled first pitch at 7:10 p.m. CT.
The game was rescheduled for 7:10 p.m. CT on Sunday night as the second half of a day-night doubleheader. The regularly-scheduled game will be at 1:10 p.m. CT.
This will be the first separate-admission, day-night doubleheader in Royals' history.
Rain was still falling when the postponement was announced and team officials said the forecast for the rest of the night was not good.
The rainout caused the Royals to have a sixth day with no game in the last 12 days, including three regularly-scheduled off-days.
This is the Royals' third postponement this season. A week ago, their Friday night game at Boston was postponed because of the terrorist manhunt and was played as part of a day-night doubleheader last Sunday. The Royals' game on Tuesday night at Detroit was postponed because of rain and has not yet been rescheduled.
Fans with tickets to Friday's game can use them for admission to the second game only on Sunday. Fans should maintain their parking receipts, which will be useable for the 7:10 p.m. game.
There's a better forecast for Saturday's 6:10 p.m. CT game. The Indians also have a game in Kansas City on Monday night, the finale of a scheduled four-game series.
The scheduled pitchers for Friday night, the Royals' Ervin Santana and the Indians' Scott Kazmir, instead will start Saturday night's game at Kauffman Stadium.
The Royals will send Jeremy Guthrie against the Indians' Justin Masterson in Sunday's first game and both teams' starters for the night game have not yet been determined. However, Luis Mendoza had been scheduled to start on Sunday for the Royals so he's a likely candidate.
On Monday night, the Royals' Wade Davis will be matched against the Tribe's Ubaldo Jiminez, who originally was scheduled to start on Saturday.
