Yost says not to read too much into early lineups

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Jarrod Dyson was in the lineup card in left field in the Royals' Cactus League opener, filling in for Alex Gordon, who is still rehabbing his right wrist.

Manager Ned Yost also plopped Dyson second in the batting order, leading to obvious speculation that when Gordon is healthy enough to play in games, Gordon might be the Royals' No. 2 hitter this season.

Not so fast, Yost said.

"We haven't gotten there," Yost said. "[Gordon] would fit. We got a number of guys who would fit.

"You guys want to open your Christmas presents in July. Have some patience."

The Royals used several players in the No. 2 spot last season, with Nori Aoki winding up there in the second half of September and throughout the postseason. Aoki is now with the Giants.

The No. 2 spot wasn't particularly productive last season for Yost -- just a .251/.293/.330 slash line -- which means he'll spend much of the spring trying to determine his best option there.

"I got to see it," Yost said. "I could hit [Lorenzo] Cain there. I could hit [Alex] Rios there. I could hit Gordo there. Hell, I could hit [Eric Hosmer] there.

"But I got to see it and feel it. The order doesn't reflect anything right now. I'm just trying to get guys in there."
