Royals place Kratz on DL with left foot injury

KANSAS CITY -- The Royals on Wednesday placed backup catcher Erik Kratz on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Monday, and called up catcher Francisco Pena from Triple-A Omaha.

Kratz injured his left foot during his last at-bat in Sunday's game against the Tigers, and has plantar fasciitis, a painful disorder resulting from inflammation.

"He can jog and he can catch," manager Ned Yost said, "but he just can't run. It'll be fine in five to seven days, but we have to have someone now to back up Sal [Perez]."

Kratz will be eligible to return from the DL on May 19.

Pena was hitting .239 at Triple-A with one homer and five RBIs.
