Giants add Lollis, Osich, put Hudson on DL

WASHINGTON -- The Giants made a flurry of roster moves Friday to fill their ever-changing needs, which primarily stem from injuries.

Needing more versatility in the outfield, the Giants purchased the contract of Ryan Lollis, a career Minor Leaguer, from Triple-A Sacramento. Gone is first baseman-left fielder Travis Ishikawa, who was designated for assignment.

Seeking another left-handed reliever to complement Javier Lopez, the Giants purchased the contract of Josh Osich from Sacramento and optioned right-hander Mike Broadway to the Triple-A affiliate.

Also, in what could represent the first rotation within the starting rotation, San Francisco placed right-hander Tim Hudson on the 15-day disabled list with a strained throwing shoulder. That cleared roster room for right-hander Jake Peavy, who started Friday night's series opener against the Washington Nationals.

Lollis, 28, might appear to be an unlikely addition. He was a 37th-round selection in the 2009 MLB Draft who has spent most of his seven professional seasons at Class A and Double-A. But his ability to play all three outfield spots made him a more attractive alternative than Ishikawa, whose natural position is first base.

Center fielder Angel Pagan's balky knees, as well as the absences of Nori Aoki and Hunter Pence due to injuries, heightened the necessity of bringing aboard a true outfielder.

"I didn't want to have to put two first basemen in the corner outfield spots. That would weaken the defense too much," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said, referring to Ishikawa and Brandon Belt.

Lollis, who improved his chances for a promotion by hitting .353 in 32 games for Sacramento, was beyond thrilled.

"When I put on the uniform and get on that field, there's going to be a lot of emotions," he said before batting practice Friday. Asked about his perseverance, the Houston native said simply, "I don't like that word 'quit.'"

Bochy said Osich, who has struck out 174 batters in 171 2/3 professional innings, will relieve some of the left-handed bullpen burden from Lopez. Due largely to Jeremy Affeldt's ongoing disabled-list stint, Lopez appeared in eight of San Francisco's previous 10 games entering Friday.

"We felt like we had to balance out the bullpen," Bochy said.

To make 40-man roster space for Osich, the Giants designated right-hander Brett Bochy, son of the Giants manager, for assignment.

Hudson, who left the team Wednesday to attend to a personal matter, will receive even more time to heal and restore some vigor.

"He just needs a break. He'll be fine," Bochy said of the 17-year veteran, who's 5-7 with a 4.68 ERA in 15 starts.

When Hudson's ready for activation, it's quite possible he'll replace a starter who's hurting.
