Zimmerman glad mentor Cuddyer leaving on own terms

WASHINGTON -- Ryan Zimmerman has nothing but respect for the Mets' Michael Cuddyer who announced his retirement on Saturday. The two grew up together in Hampton Roads, Va., the same area that produced David Wright and the Upton brothers -- Justin and Melvin.

Zimmerman considers Cuddyer a mentor. When Zimmerman had his first shoulder problems in 2008, he sought Cuddyer's advice. In fact, Zimmerman went on to say that Cuddyer is the reason players from his area like Zimmerman, Wright and the Upton brothers were noticed.

"I was happy that he was able to go out on his own terms," Zimmerman said. "Not many people are lucky to do that. I learned a lot from him. I still talk to him quite a bit. I'm happy for him."
