Padres announce players of month for June

SAN DIEGO -- The Padres Player Development Staff selected their Minor League Player of the Month for June on Monday.

Class A Lake Elsinore shortstop Jace Peterson was named hitter and baserunner of the month, Double-A San Antonio starter Keyvius Sampson was named pitcher of the month and Triple-A Tucson infielder Dean Anna was named the defensive player of the month.

Peterson hit .389 in June and hit safely in 24 of 27 games, including an eight-game hitting streak to begin the month and a 14-game streak from June 10-27. He scored 25 runs, hit four doubles, four triples and four home runs with 19 RBIs. He was also named the baserunner of the month after successfully stealing all 12 bases he attempted.

Peterson was taken in the first round (58th overall) by the Padres in the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Sampson was 3-1 with a 2.20 ERA in six games and five starts for Double-A San Antonio in June. He struck out 32 in his 28 2/3 innings pitched, holding opposing batters to a .200 batting average. He was drafted in the fourth round in 2009 by the Padres.

Anna did not make an error in 29 games for Tucson in June, despite splitting time between three different positions -- 11 games at second, four at third and 18 at shortstop. He even played a game in the outfield when the team needed him. Anna -- a former 26th-round Draft pick in 2008 -- has a .987 fielding percentage this season.
