Padres' bats bust out against Giants

San Diego notches 20 hits, with at least one from every starter

SAN DIEGO -- As part of their postgame festivities Saturday, the Padres treated the sold-out crowd at Petco Park to an extravagant laser show.

The real fireworks, though, occurred during the game, as the slumbering Padres offense erupted for 10 runs on 20 hits, doing most of the damage against Mr. October, Madison Bumgarner, in a 10-2 runaway victory over the Giants.

"We made up for the last few nights in one night," said Padres third baseman Will Middlebrooks, who had three hits and knocked in two runs.

The Padres, who went 22 consecutive innings without a run over a three-game stretch from Wednesday to Friday, had five runs by the end of the third inning Saturday against Bumgarner.

All told, the Padres had nine hits with two strikes.

"That's abnormal," Middlebrooks said.

Manager Bud Black liked the production one through nine, as each starter had at least one hit during the game.

"We battled and we had a lot of quality plate appearances. We were patient, yet aggressive at the same time," Black said. "We were ready to hit, we were ready to hit mistakes. We laid off of some borderline pitches. We were 0-2, 1-2 and got back to 2-2, 3-2. We had good at-bats all night."

Matt Kemp finished with four hits, including two doubles. Yangervis Solarte and Middlebrooks had three hits and Wil Myers, Justin Upton and Derek Norris each had two hits.

And most of that damage was against Bumgarner, who allowed five runs on 10 hits in three innings.

"You never know what you're going to get; he's one of the best pitchers in the league," Kemp said. "... Tonight, he made a couple of mistakes and [we] made some things happen. And then it just kept going the whole night."

The middle of the order was especially dangerous, with Kemp and Upton combining for six hits, three runs and three RBIs, all while allowing those around them in the lineup to see more fastballs because of their mere presence.

"I think this year is going to be fun to see what we're capable of doing," Kemp said. "Not just the two of us, but with everybody. We have a talented team. I expect big things out of us."
