Solarte suffers mild left oblique strain

SAN DIEGO -- Yangervis Solarte left the Padres' 5-3 win over the Rockies on Wednesday in the top of the seventh with a mild left oblique strain.

Solarte, who was starting at shortstop for just the second time in his Major League career, ranged to his left to field a ground ball up the middle hit by Charlie Blackmon. His throw to first was wild and ruled an error, letting Blackmon reach.

Solarte then pulled up and was examined by team doctors before leaving the field, intermittently touching his side. He was replaced at shortstop by Alexi Amarista.

Solarte was pushed into duty at shortstop after Everth Cabrera was placed on the disabled list Tuesday with a hamstring strain. Amarista is the usual backup shortstop, but was supposed to be given a day off Wednesday.

San Diego manager Bud Black was encouraged that Solarte might not miss much time with the oblique injury.

"We think it's a mild strain on the left side," Black said. "We'll assess it day to day and try to keep him active [on the roster]. He thinks that he's going to be fine."

Solarte has a line of .282/.370/.423 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 20 games with San Diego since being acquired in the Chase Headley deal on July 22.
