Reigning NL MVP Posey earns Player of Week honors

Giants catcher Buster Posey is putting up MVP-caliber offensive numbers again, and his recent efforts earned him National League Player of the Week honors for the first time since 2010.

Posey, the reigning NL MVP, tied for the Major League lead and led the NL with a .500 (11-for-22) average, while recording a .560 on-base percentage and slugging 1.182 last week, both the top marks in the Senior Circuit. The 26-year-old backstop also tied for the NL lead with four homers and 26 total bases, had the third-most hits in the league and ranked sixth in the NL with six RBIs.

Posey raised his average from .307 to .322 over six games last week, giving him the fifth-highest batting average among qualifying hitters. His batting line on the season is .322/.397/.543, not far removed from the .336/.408/.549 line he posted en route to being named NL MVP last season. Posey has already clubbed 12 homers, putting him halfway to matching his 2012 output, and leads NL catchers with 48 RBIs this season.

Posey hit a solo homer in Tuesday's loss to the Dodgers and followed that up by going 3-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs as the Giants lost, 4-2, on Wednesday. He tallied another three hits in Friday's series opener against the Rockies, going deep once again as San Francisco lost, 4-1, at Coors Field. Posey ranks second among NL catchers with 23 multi-hit games this season.

This was Posey's second career weekly award. He received his first for the week of July 4-11, 2010, and went on to be named the 2010 NL Rookie of the Year.
