The Pirates' manager offered to turn over his lineup cards from Saturday's game to Scherzer as a memento of the near-perfect game.
"I sent Scherzer the cards to see if he wanted them," Hurdle said. "And the message he sent back was, 'I don't need anything. I've got a whole bunch of stuff.' So I asked, 'If you don't, would you sign one?'"
Hurdle held up the two lineup cards that came back from the Nationals' clubhouse.
"He signed both. Very nice. [Nationals manager] Matt Williams even signed one, and I signed the other," Hurdle said. "I'll probably auction it off for charity."
Throughout the season, Hurdle has been in the habit of presenting ex-Korean All-Star Jung Ho Kang with lineup cards from games in which he experiences a Major League first. Is he going to get one as a souvenir from his first no-hitter?
"Maybe," Hurdle said, grinning. "But he's not getting one of these. Maybe a copy."
