Readers in the Outfield Literacy Day set for Saturday

Event benefits Literacy Project Foundation, helps increase children's reading skills

BALTIMORE -- The Angels Baseball Foundation will host its second annual Readers in the Outfield Literacy Day on Saturday at 11 a.m. PT in Angel Stadium's Diamond Club.

The event will benefit the Literacy Project Foundation (LPF), which aims to help at-risk and disadvantaged youth increase their reading skills in order to prepare them for life. To date, LPF has served more than 2,500 young readers in elementary schools throughout Anaheim, at no cost.

At Saturday's event, more than 100 second graders will show off their skills by playing interactive games with Angels executives and alumni, sponsors and community leaders. Former Angels Chuck Finley, Rod Carew, Clyde Wright and Bobby Grich will be on hand to interact with the LPF graduates. Angels chairman Dennis Kuhl and Angels alumni also will treat them to lunch, games and raffle prizes, with the alumni sharing stories of how literacy has influenced their careers.

All proceeds from the event will go toward bridging the literacy gap for at-risk youth. More information on the LPF can be found at www.literacyprojectfoundation.org.
