Smith garners NL Player of Week honors

Padres outfielder Seth Smith, who led the Major Leagues with a .500 (14-for-28) batting average last week, has been named the National League's Player of the Week.

Smith led all of baseball in average, slugging percentage (1.000) and total bases (28). He also ranked first in the NL in hits and second in on-base percentage (.576) while tying for third in RBIs (seven). Smith homered, doubled five times and tripled three times while also drawing five walks over the course of the week.

The award is Smith's first career weekly honor. He is the first Padres player to be recognized since closer Huston Street, who won for the first week of September 2013.

Smith had five multihit games last week, including one on Sunday, when he went 2-for-5 and drove in the decisive run in the fourth inning. He had back-to-back three-hit games on Friday and Saturday, twice making a bid to become the first Padres player to hit for the cycle. Smith was a single short on Saturday and a home run short on Friday night. He is the first San Diego player since Brian Giles (Aug. 17-18, 2004) to fall one hit shy of the cycle in consecutive games.

Smith's three triples last week came in a span of 20 at-bats after he went a span of 603 at-bats without one, dating back to 2012. He is now tied for the Major League lead in three-baggers.

Colorado's Charlie Blackmon, Corey Dickerson, Troy Tulowitzki and Jordan Lyles; Pittsburgh's Andrew McCutchen; San Francisco's Buster Posey; Miami's Steve Cishek; and Chicago's Jeff Samardzija were also recognized for their performances last week.
