Nats agree to free-agent deals with Kelley, Petit

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Nationals improved their bullpen this week by agreeing to terms with right-handers Shawn Kelley and Yusmeiro Petit.

The signing of Kelley, expected to pitch in the late innings for Washington, was announced on Friday. He enjoyed the best year of his career in 2015, posting a 2.45 ERA in 53 appearances for the Padres.

Petit, who was non-tendered by the Giants recently and whose deal has not yet been announced, will most likely be a long man out of the bullpen. He is best known in Washington for pitching six shutout innings of relief for the Giants in Game 2 of the 2014 National League Division Series against the Nationals, who lost the game in 18 innings.

The Nationals are looking to revamp their bullpen after it struggled in the second half of '15. They are also still looking to trade arms at the the back end of the bullpen -- Jonathan Papelbon and Drew Storen.
