Short hops

• The Padres have requested release waivers on infielder/outfielder James Darnell, who will miss the rest of the season with an injury to his left shoulder. Darnell suffered the injury swinging a bat last month. He was to visit Dr. James Andrews on Wednesday to determine if surgery is needed. Teams have 48 hours to claim Darnell. There's a chance the team re-signs him to a Minor League contract.

• The Padres have signed three more Draft picks; infielder Josh VanMeter (fifth round), first baseman Jake Bauers (7th) and right-handed pitcher Adrian De Horta (8th). All three will play for the Padres entry in the Arizona League. Games begin Thursday. The Padres have signed 24 players from their Draft class.

• Left fielder Carlos Quentin, who hasn't played since Friday because of a sore left shoulder, could be back in the lineup in a 'couple of days,' according to Black. Quentin will likely swing a bat soon.
